Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

For this assignment, I asked my mother, my grandmother, and then a friend of mine that lives in Australia to define culture and diversity.

My mother told me culture was the way one was raised. That it doesn't change at all as you grow older because of it. As for diversity, she said that it's based on how we look and where we are from.

My grandmother told me culture was our background, what makes us who we are. We are raised to be a certain way. When asked about diversity, she told me it was the color of our skin.

My friend that lives in Australia told me culture was how we were raised mixed with the influences we have in our lives that help us to grow as people. Diversity, she said, was all the things that make us different from one another.

I'd say that the answers round out what we've been learning so far in the course about culture and diversity. I think my friend from Australia has the best grip on what the two things are and explains them to the best ability of someone who doesn't have the educational background. I like that she mentions that diversity isn't just one aspect but every aspect that comes up and makes us different from one another.

I'd say for omissions, while they discussed things like faith, skin color, race, and gender identity, none of them brought up disabilities. That's something that is added into the diversity that most people don't think about, which is sad because honestly disabilities make up a large portion of diversity.

I'd say that it's influenced the way I think on the topics by making me want to make sure I have a full picture of what culture and diversity mean. I don't want to forget to add something in that is important to the discussion just because I haven't taken the time to look into it all.

  1. Delaney,

I agree with you, your friend from Australia has the closet to accurate definition of the two terms. What field does your friend work in? Also, I will admit I am not as an effective teacher of children with disabilities therefore, I struggle in supporting them. However, children with disabilities should be included within our topic of diversity. Children with disabilities are misunderstood just as children without disabilities. I need to be more mindful and willing to learn how to accept their differences.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and bringing children with disabilities to the forefront of our study of culture and diversity.

  2. Delaney,

I think it is so great to know people from around the world. The differences of how to see the same things across the world and putting them into our perspectives of our surroundings is incredible. Diversity is seen through the eyes of so many different people and seen as so many different things, therefore, our definitions are ever-changing with the world and societies we live in.

  3. You make a great point about the omission of disabilities. This is something that didn't really even cross my mind during this assignment either! I love how you phrased missing out, just because you didn't think or take the time to think about each piece of culture and diversity. Great post!
